In 1869, players embark on a journey to build a successful trading empire. The game revolves around buying and selling goods across various ports around the globe, managing fleets of ships, and dealing with all the challenges of 19th-century seafaring, including pirates, storms, and changing economic conditions. Strategic planning is key, as players must decide the best routes, cargoes, and timing to maximize profits. Merchant ships are acquired in an auction that takes place in the port. You will then transport raw materials around the world with the purchased ships and sell something here, buy again elsewhere. Of course, buying and selling must be at bargain prices in order to earn the most. At the start of the game, in addition to your company name, home town, etc., you choose whether you want to play for 5, 10, 15, or 25 years, with each move counting as one month. All in all, if you choose, say, 25 years, you'll have 300 moves. The game can be played with up to four players on one computer. With its mix of business management, historical context, and strategic gameplay, 1869 offers a nice experience for players looking to dive into the world of 19th-century commerce.
